Natura 2000 is an ecological network composed of sites designated under the Birds Directive (Special Protection Areas, SPAs) and the Habitats Directive (Sites of Community Importance, SCIs, and Special Areas of Conservation, SACs).

For each Natura 2000 site, national authorities have submitted a standard data form (SDF) that contains an extensive description of the site and its ecology. The European Topic Centre for Biological Diversity (ETC/BD), based in Paris, is responsible for validating this data and creating an EU wide descriptive database.

This website is intended to provide a geographical view of the Natura 2000 ecological network.

  • Rezervatia Biosferei Delta Dunarii (RBDD)

  • Future of Butterflies in Europe III

Dutch Butterfly Conservation (De Vlinderstichting) is organising the 3rd international symposium on Future of Butterflies in Europe, to be held in Wageningen from 29th to 31st March 2012.

Future of Butterflies in Europe III is the third symposium on this theme. The first one was held in 1989, marking the start of a period of fruitful research, new insights on butterfly ecology and distribution, and the rise of a broad awareness of butterflies as indicators and tools in nature conservation.

The second congress, in 2008, witnessed the emergence of butterfly conservation in a European perspective, with butterflies as one of the leading groups of species targeted in conservation as well as in EU policy - and with increasing attention for the role of moths.

Today, with a full-grown community of scientists, conservation practitioners and volunteers working on Lepidoptera, it is increasingly important to exchange ideas about ongoing studies and future plans. And with continued threats from both climate and land use change, the sense of urgency remains high!

  • High Nature Value Farming in South-Eastern Europe: Policy Opportunities and Challenges in view of EU Accession and CAP post-2013

The concept of HNV farmland is a novelty for the SEE countries. But even in the absence of detailed studies it is clear that the generally very extensive character of agriculture in these countries suggests that there are large areas of HNV farmland in a variety of farming systems. It comes as no surprise that the region is considered as the ‘green gold’ of South Eastern Europe (Plantlife) and the ‘green lungs’ of Europe (EEA).

  • IUCN World Conservation Congress

The IUCN World Conservation Congress is the world’s largest and most important conservation event. Held every four years, the Congress aims to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development.

The 2012 World Conservation Congress will be held from 6 to 15 September 2012 in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and social organizations will discuss, debate and decide solutions for the world’s most pressing environment and development issues.

The Congress starts with a Forum where IUCN members and partners discuss cutting edge ideas, thinking and practice. The Forum leads into the IUCN Members’ Assembly, a unique global environmental parliament of governments and NGOs.

Effective conservation action cannot be achieved by conservationists alone. The 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress is the place to put aside differences and work together to provide the means and mechanisms for good environmental governance, engaging all parts of society to share both responsibilities and the benefits of conservation.

    The Congress has two components:

    • a Forum where IUCN members and partners discuss cutting edge ideas, thinking and practice.
    • a Members’ Assembly which is a unique global environmental parliament of governments and NGOs

We are pleased to inform you that the Call for Contributions for the Forum segment of the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress is now open!

  • Modern European Agriculture Jeopardizes Biodiversity? Romanian Study Highlights Importance of Traditional Agriculture in Protecting Amphibians

Traditional agricultural practices can make a major contribution to preserving biodiversity in the EU's new member states in Central and Eastern Europe. By contrast, the construction of roads and the intensification of agriculture currently encouraged by EU farming subsidies pose a threat to amphibians. The rich natural environment still extant in many accession countries is under threat, according to scientists writing in the journal Biological Conservation.

just our 40th birthday but also WWD 2011 with the slogan “Forests for water and wetlands”, recognising that 2011 has

been declared the “International Year of Forests” by the United Nations.

Se dorește desemnarea a trei situri Ramsar transfrontaliere importante: Iezer-Calarasi (RO) - Srebarna (BG); Suhaia (RO) - Belene (BG); Bistret (RO) - Ibisha Island (BG).

  • Trei familii de lupi, reintroduse in Muntii Macinului
